Dorminy Medical Center Launches Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program

Dorminy Medical Center has entered an agreement with PulmoRehab, LLC, d/b/a Meridian, to develop and operate a pulmonary rehabilitation clinic at Dorminy Medical Center.

Pulmonary rehabilitation programs are designed to help people with pulmonary problems (e.g., chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [COPD], respiratory symptoms) recover faster and live healthier. This program includes exercise, education, counseling and support for patients and their families. Participation in the pulmonary rehabilitation program can relive breathlessness, increase exercise capacity and improve your overall health.

For residents of Ben Hill County and the surrounding areas living with lung diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema, chronic bronchitis and pulmonary fibrosis, Dorminy Medical Center is partnering with Meridian to offer a new Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program. Located in the Rehab Department at Dorminy Medical Center, the program provides a comprehensive outpatient exercise and education program to help patients reduce and control the symptoms and complications related to lung diseases and improve their quality of life.

"Collaboration is the key to the program's success, and participants see the benefits of this approach right from the start," said Paige Wynn, CEO of Dorminy Medical Center. "After getting a physician referral for the program, patients undergo pulmonary function tests and work closely with our registered respiratory therapists. Together, our team and your referring physician develop a customized, carefully coordinated program that helps strengthen breathing muscles and enhance daily living."

The overall duration of the program varies according to each individual's needs and goals. Loved ones are also encouraged to participate to provide additional support to program participants.

Chronic lung disease is a widespread condition that disproportionately impacts rural communities and is a leading cause of mortality and disability in the U.S.  “The Meridian program can significantly improve a patients’ health related quality of life, reduce exacerbations and the cost associated with their healthcare. Recent studies have shown that patients that participate in pulmonary rehabilitation program have a 38% reduction in hospitalizations and a significantly lower risk of mortality,” said Tom Futch, CEO of Meridian.

Most insurance carriers cover the cost of this program, but some providers may require a co-pay or limit coverage to a certain number of visits. Anyone considering the program should check with his or her insurance provider regarding coverage for respiratory care service.
